Deer Valley Lodge, a ski resort in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah, has plans to eventually add five new chairlifts. Suppose that one lift costs $2 million, and preparing the slope and installing the lift costs another $1.3 million. The lift will allow 300 additional skiers on the slopes, but there are only 40 days a year when the extra capacity will be needed. (Assume that Deer park will sell all 300 lift tickets on those 40 days.) Running the new lift will cost $500 a day for the entire 200 days the lodge is open. Assume that the lift tickets at Deer Valley cost $55 a day and the added cash expenses for each skier-day are $5. The new lift has an economic life of 20 years.
1.Assume that the before-tax required rate of return for Deer Valley is 14%. Compute the before-tax NPV of the new lift and advise the managers of Deer Valley about whether adding the lift will be a profitable investment. Show calculations to support your answer.

2.Assume that the after-tax required rate of return for Deer Valley is 8%, the income tax rate is 40%, and the MACRS recovery period is 10 years. Compute the after-tax NPV of the new lift and advise the managers of Deer Valley about whether adding the lift will be a profitable investment. Show calculations to support your answer.
3.What subjective factors would affect the investment decision?

factor in risks, interest rates for the needed borrowing (cost of capital), opportunity loss costs (what else could you do with the money)

How climbing a mountain relates to a journey?

So far I have…

•You need to have experience climbing a HILL before a mountain-
•You can’t predict the future or where your journey will lead – can’t see the top of the mountain
•The weather and climate can influence the way you go about certain obstacles

when you set out on a journey you have a fixed goal-your destination! its just the same with the mountain, you want to reach the summit, but on the way you will meet certain obstacles, and you will encounter new and interesting things, for example ,a flower you have never seen,a bird with a beautiful song that you have never heard-you may bump into fellow mountain climbers and make new friends-all these things are more interesting and will enrich your life more than attaining the summit at full bore, but you have to be open to these experiences, and if you never make it to the top,who cares, you are wiser-its the same with a journey, just go with the flow

Camping/Hiking/Survival Gear question?

Is there an brand known more then others for having virutally indestructible gear. I am in need of boots, socks, pants, shirt, hiking pack, tent, sleeping bag.
I know brands like North Face and others are heavily marketed but are those what the pros use.

For example what kind or gear do the real deal hikers and extended campers use?

Thanks
this site seems to have everything one would need…but clothes..and the selection is not overwhelming like other sites. so if anyone wants to take a look around and make some recommendations that would be swell

Traditionally Colman comes to mind for gear, ie lanterns, stoves, tents a lot of their stuff made well over 50 years ago is still working fine specially their stoves and lanterns. Can’t say the same for their tents, bags and such as stuff is made to ware out any more so you will come back and buy the newest thing.

High technology gear (not the brand name) has a lot of competition and I look at the ratings gear gets by those that have used it, and the price. I am willing to spend a bit extra for quality but paying extra does not mean you always get quality.

Tents are a good example of that tents can vary from $30 to $800 for a two man tent they are all pretty much made from the same type of fabrics and all are made in china, india or pakistan. Sure there are added value features but all wear out the same, leak the same rip the same. So I look at what suits my needs and gives me the best warranty and again Colman leads in all area’s, price, quality, and guaranty,

Usually top end stores like REI will sell the most popular products out there but again popular does not mean best. Aluminum plates for camping is an example. They sell a plate for $6 and an old pie tin is free. So in other words shop around for what suits your needs and always look for something cheaper that works the same as the expensive shelf product.

Where can I find a good place for sand volleyball in the Houston area? Need one with available open play.?

Willowbrook has open play on Friday nights. They have just recently finished their sand court. You can check them out at willowbrooksports.com They will be starting some tournaments on the weekends soon.
I am not sure if Third Coast has any open play. They are on http://www.thirdcoastvolleyball.com/
You can use the free sand courts on I-10 at Barker Cypress on the south side of the freeway. They are open all day, 7 days. Nice fenced in area with some shade trees. For FREE.

What is the song used in the Chase Sapphire Credit card commercial with the man and woman on the ski lift?

What is the song used for the Chase Sapphire Credit card commercial? It’s the one with the man and woman on the ski lift. At the end of the commercial she is shown giving him a massage inside of the ski lodge. Name of the song or perhaps who performs it?

im new to mountain climbing and need to know some essentials?

any tips advice. i have started repelling and now moving to climbing. i have my harness and carabiners and and crappy rope(any tips on which rope to get would be good too) thanks for your time and advice

Are you trying to do rock climbing or mountaineering? Either way it sounds like you are at the toproping stage in your career. First, take a climbing and anchor building course where a certified guide will teach you how to belay, set up topropes, and safely build anchors. Then you will know what you need and how to properly set up. These courses are usually less than $100. Also, buy and thoroughly read "Mountaineerin: Freedom of the Hills". It is the 575-page mountaineering/climbing bible. It has great illustrations and starts from the beginning. Probably any somewhat-serious climber or mountaineer that you talk to has read this book. Be careful and have fun.

outdoor (beach/sand) volleyball rules? WILL CHOSE BEST ANSWER?

i usually play indoor volleyball. what are the main different rules in outdoor volleyball then indoor volleyball. i will be playing in a doubles tournament at regionals. its my first sand volleyball tourney. PLEASE HELP ME! i need to no the rules!!! any tips? thanks!!! will chose best answer!

Well, off the bat, you should know that you will be playing on a smaller court and that block touches will count as a contact. So if you go up to block a ball and touch it, you and your partner only have two contacts to get it over the net. One of the other tough adjustments players need to make on the beach is that sets are called much tighter on the beach. The ball needs to come out of your hands much more cleanly (far less spin) than indoors. Because it takes time to learn how to set on the beach, it is important for beginners to work on bump setting, as their hand setting probably will get called for doubles (even if it was fine indoors). You also can’t set or double a serve. That’s basically it in terms of the major rules. Obviously the scoring is different, games to 21, switch sides every 7 points, but certain tournaments adjust what they play to in order to meet time contraints. Good luck at your tourney and understand that the game plays differently and you won’t be a pro overnight.

Advice for mountain climbing?

I’m planning on starting mountain climbing in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. How should I prepare as far as what foods to bring and some other items to pack?

Agreed with above.

Also, wake up REALLY early, pack light, travel fast. Plan your route, but know the whole area.
